When do you add the candy?
Does the balloon harden to the point that you can cut a hole for the candy and hanging without the balloon popping?

After the final layer of papier mâché dries and hardens, I carefully cut a small door for the candy by cutting three sides of a rectangle. The balloon is still soft inside. I pop the balloon and remove it through the door. Sometimes the balloon pops while I’m cutting the door, but that’s okay. I always add the candy last, usually right before the party starts. Some piñatas have to be hung up before the candy is added, if the additional weight of the candy might squash part of the piñata.
