Starfish pinata
Answer from Piñata Boy
Here are three ways of making a starfish leg:
1) Grab a few layers of newspaper and wrap them around a bottle or other cone-shaped object to form a newspaper cone, then cover it two layers of papier mâché. Once it’s dry, pull out the loose newspaper from inside the cone and flatten the cone into something more like a starfish leg. You may need to apply a few strips of papier mâché onto the flattened cone to help it hold its new shape.
2) Get a long, thick balloon like one of these, cover it with papier mâché, and when it’s dry cut it lengthwise and reshape it into a flattened cone. You’ll need to tape it closed and apply another layer of papier mâché across the cut to make it hold its shape.
3) Cut out a long triangular shape from a piece of thin cardboard and bend it lengthwise, then tape the sides of the triangle onto a flat piece of thin cardboard. This gives you a kind of half-cone, as shown in the picture below. You can control how wide the starfish leg is by how wide the base piece is, and how round the top of the leg is by how wide the triangle is.
Which method works best probably depends on the starfish design you have in mind. Good luck!
Thanks for your help! I think I like the 3rd idea best so far – though I prefer balloons to cardboard – I have found the long animal making balloons don’t always inflate evenly and bulking them up can be a bit of a hassle. I’m always looking for short cuts so long as I am not compromising the quality of the creation!
