I made a piñata but the head is too big and heavy and does not stay in place. Help!!!!
Answer from Piñata Boy
It’s hard to say for sure without knowing more details. If the head is just too big and doesn’t look right, then your best bet is to discard it and make a smaller one now that you have a better idea of what size you need. If it looks okay but just won’t stay in place, then you have a few options.
If your piñata has a round head and a round body, it will be more difficult to attach them because you’re stacking two spheres and there isn’t much contact area. You might be able to improve this by cutting away a circular section at the top of the body or at the bottom of the head so that one piece rests on the other. You can see what I’m talking about by checking out the Pirates of the Caribbean piñata. The skull was initially made from two spheres, and to attach them more firmly, I cut a section out from one sphere before attaching them.
If the problem is that the head is too heavy, one solution might be to attach the hanging hook in the inside top of the body, and run the hook up through the center of the head and out a small hole in the top of the head. This will help hold the head in place when the piñata starts swinging around. You’ll still need to reinforce the neck with papier mâché.
Good luck!
Thanks!!! You have saved my piñata!! As I didn’t have time to make anew head, I follow your advise and made it stronger by running the hanging hook through the body and the head. Thanks again.
Depending on the damage, it’s usually easiest to get a piece of posterboard or thin cardboard and lay it over the damaged area. Tape it down with masking tape, and then cement it in place with papier mâché if necessary.
