I have made a very large unicorn t rex pinata. It is 40″ tall, 28″ wide (not including the tail, and the hollow fill area is 51″ around. The pinata alone weights about 5 lbs. I have roughly 10lbs of candy and nother 5 to 7 lbs or goodies.
What is the best option to get the pinata to support well say 20 pounds?

The key to a successful hanging hook in a piñata, especially when it’s a large and heavy one, is to spread out the weight over as large an area as possible. The Adding the Hanging Hook page shows how I do it. By spreading out the force over a larger area, you reduce the pressure being applied at the point of the hook, and this reduces the chance that the hook will tear through.
It’s easiest to add the hanging hook before you decorate, but it’s not hard to add it even after decorating. Just fine an inconspicuous place where you can cut a door, and insert the hook by reaching in through the door and pushing the hook out through the top from the inside.
On an even larger piñata, especially if it has more than one candy compartment, I’ll add two or three hanging hooks to help spread the weight further.
Good luck!
