My partner loves guitar’s, so for fathers day I decided to make one for him. I used a wii guitar from guitar hero game for the template, I wrapped it with glad wrap then put the paper Mache on top, me being impatient I only done one layer to get the shape then took it of which lead to it sinking in and warping a bit but you learn from your mistake. I use PVA glue solution due to my son having asthma and allergies, since he will help he’s daddy break it. Once the layers had dried I used acrylic paint and a crackle medium to give the effect, for the back I used crepe paper to decorate it.

This is fantastic! Making a large flat shape like this with papier mâché is very difficult. The papier mâché tends to get wavy as it dries or else the sides sink in as you construct the piñata. That’s one reason why store-bought piñatas use corrugated cardboard for their flat surfaces — the sides are flat, but the piñata is almost impossible to break. This is a challenging design, and it came out looking wonderful, and using a Guitar Hero guitar as a mold was a great idea!
Thanks so much. I thought maybe next time use a cardboard for the front to keep the shape but the back use paper mache do you think that would work.
Yes, but if I were to make one today I think I would use thin cardboard for the whole thing. I used to think of thin cardboard as cheating, but sometimes papier mâché and newspaper is just more trouble than it’s worth. As long as the final piñata is breakable, it doesn’t matter whether you used thin cardboard or papier mâché and newspaper to build it, so go with whichever one is easiest for you — even if it’s both!
