What width should the crepe streamer be?

After seeing your website I am so excited about making a pirate parrot pinata for my son’s 5th birthday. I live in a small town in New Zealand and probably will need to buy streamers online, but don’t know what the correct width should be. Seems they come in 1″ or 2″. Thank you also for such a wonderful resource!

Answer from Piñata Boy

There’s not a correct or incorrect width, but the streamers sold in the U.S. are typically 1.75 inches (4.45 cm) wide.

The way I normally use crepe paper to decorate piñatas, I cut the streamer sideways, partway through, like this.  The cut part becomes the fringe, and the uncut part gets glued to the piñata.  The uncut part is what actually covers the surface of the piñata and hides the newspaper.  Normally I make my cuts 2/3 or 3/4 of the way across the streamer, but if I want shorter fringe, I don’t make the cuts as deep.  If I want longer fringe, I make longer cuts, but this leaves less of an uncut spine to cover the surface of the piñata, so I have to cut a lot more fringe to cover the entire surface.

So if you want longer fringe or if you want faster surface coverage, go with the 2 inch streamer.  A 1 inch wide streamer would be nice for giving part of the piñata a different surface texture, but covering an entire piñata with crepe paper that is only 1 inch wide would be a lot more work.

Good luck!
