Answer from Piñata Boy
I don’t recommend putting Vaseline on the balloon or beach ball because it can leave a slippery layer on the inside of the piñata that gets on the candy. I usually wrap the balloon or beach ball in one layer of dry newspaper before applying the papier mâché strips so that there’s no issue with dried-on papier mâché sticking to the balloon. But even if the papier mâché sticks to the balloon, the worst that happens is that there is a piece of balloon among the candy when the piñata breaks. The only time I’ve ever had a piñata collapse because the papier mâché was stuck to the balloon when I popped it was when the walls were too thin. If the walls are the right thickness they won’t collapse even if they stick to the balloon.
If you’ve already done it, don’t worry about it, because it might not be a problem. The dried papier mâché will soak up some of the Vaseline as long as you didn’t put in too much.
Good luck!
