I plan to make mustache pinata, but I don’t want to use cardboard because it is hard to break. Which material do you recommend and what do you think about making pinata with styrofoam?! Tnx!
Answer from Piñata Boy
Cardboard is indeed hard to break, but you can weaken it by stabbing it all over with a knife or scissors. Sheets of thin cardboard (not corrugated cardboard) can be easily shaped, layered in papier mâché, and then weakened with a knife. Other than cardboard, you can try to make a mustache shape by combining a few different shapes and sizes of balloons. Long fat balloons can be narrowed down at one end by wrapping them tightly with masking tape or duct tape, and they can be curled into shape and held in place with masking tape, then covered with papier mâché.
I’ve never used Styrofoam for a piñata. If you’re thinking about using Styrofoam as a mold for the papier mâché, I can see doing that. If you’re thinking about making the piñata itself out of Styrofoam, I would want to test that first, maybe by hanging an old Styrofoam cooler and whacking it with a stick to see how it breaks. I don’t know if the Styrofoam would squish and absorb the blows, or whether it would simply break in half with the first hit, or what. There are so many different kinds of Styrofoam out there that it’s hard to know what to expect. If it were me, though, I would stick with papier mâché.
Good luck!
