The primer i was seeing was for wood or things of the such. Like household items.. So i wondering what brand of primer do you use, so that I could get the correct type.
Answer from Piñata Boy
I usually only use primer when I’m going to paint the piñata a light color (or sometimes if I’m covering it in a light-colored crepe paper), because if I paint without using primer, the newspaper ink can bleed through the paint. When I made the Princess Ducky piñata I didn’t use primer, and I ended up having to apply something like four or five coats of yellow paint before the newspaper ink stopped bleeding through. When I made my first Pigasus piñata I didn’t use primer before covering the piñata with quilt batting, so I had to use more paint on top of the quilt batting to hide the newspaper underneath. When I made the second Pigasus I primed it before adding the quilt batting, and then I could use much less paint on top of the quilt batting. That gave the second Pigasus piñata a lighter color and a more natural texture, and overall a much better appearance.
I normally use either Kilz or Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 stain-blocking primer, but that’s just what I happen to have in my garage. Any stain-blocking primer will do, so if you ask at a hardware store or even somewhere like Wal-Mart, they may have a less expensive alternative. These primers are intended mainly for covering over stains when painting walls in a house. They’re a water-based latex paint, and I just brush on one coat until I can’t see the newspaper printing anymore.
I hope that helps. Good luck!
